NORTH ALABAMA COUNTRY DANCE SOCIETY NEWSLETTER - May 1995

TENNESSEE VALLEY SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCERS meet every Tuesday, 7-9:30 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Call 881-1497 for more information.

STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING will be held May 7 at 4:00 PM at Soos and Chuck Weber's place, 1623 Monte Sano Blvd. (Call 539-3747 for directions). Bring a dish and we'll make it a potluck dinner. Sample topics to be addressed: What to do about the heat we can expect at the Eastside dances this summer; Should NACDS host a Dance Weekend? And any other exciting topics that may arise. Any member is invited to come to these meetings.

DAR SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS are having a fund-raising coutry dance in the old gym - a rustic log building dating from 1930, near Grant, AL. Fred Beckett will be calling to the music of Lykitor Knot, and you'll surely see a bunch of the Huntsville dancers there. Look for a flyer at Huntsvillle dances this month, and more info here in June, with instructions on how to find your way to this great event.

WELCOME to new members Maggie Breece, Caroline Widner, and Bob Gibbs!

T-SHIRTS should be available "toward the end of May", per Bryan Walls. Prices will, of course, be modest (Bryan should know by about May 8 just how modest). Prepaid orders will assure the desired size. Anyone with special orders, such as sweatshirts, tote bags, special colors, or unusual sizes (like XXL) should definitely contact him ASAP (4204 Holmes Ave., Huntsville, AL 35816; 837-0656; bwalls@pobox.com.

THANKS for FEEDBACK to the eight folks who responded to last month's questionnaire Anyone who still wants to send in comments, please feel free to do so at any time, and I will either print stuff or report it at the Steering Committee Meetings, whichever seems more appropriate.

The vote for Christmas Dance location was unanimous for Eastside, because the large capacity means that no one would have to be turned away. Munchies will be allowed in the front part of the building, for those who were worried about that!

My article on same-sex dancing last month elicited quite a range of responses, from "It's not a big problem;" to agreement that it can cause significant confusion (and the comment that if a woman dances the man's part, she should be able to do the moves properly); to some strong feelings on sexist attitudes which I thought it would be good to share with everyone for some consciousness-raising.

LOST & FOUND: In the excitement (or exhaustion) of the dance, some of us occasionally abandon items of clothing and other personal effects on site. Fred has a pair of size 13 men's shoes, a small Colorado Rockies baseball cap, an infant's sweater, a belt, a scarf, a tie...See Fred if you've lost something (or Harry Delugach, if it was an Eastside event).

MORE FEEDBACK REQUESTS: Let your reactions to the performance of the various bands be known to Fred or Harry, so they can please you with future bookings!

We Want News! Please send or call me (536-2190) with news of yourself or other dancers, or whatever other information you think we should share here. Photos are appreciated too, and I'll be sure to return them after they've been reproduced.
